Written by Ruth PRAWER JHABVALA). ……And so that, the things can change.
Some of you have certainly already felt like having, a new kind of food.
Especially, when it is a lazy Sunday afternoon. And your house is full of silence. One of these Sunday afternoons, I wondered, how could I have fun ?
Can you lead your own way in order to change your lifestyle ?
Manipulation can be a snake, hidden within each daily task, as cooking on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Can you be manipulated, or can you manipulate some one only by breaking a few eggs to make a recipe ?
Either, your answer is that, power like manipulation can be both an expression of domination to destroy someone, or it can be an expression of cooperation, with equal benefits for each negotiator around the table.
I-What I m supposed to be
Power and manipulation can both give benefits to all of us.
What a pity ! My oven was out of order. What could I do to make a cake ? I found a pan with a huge lid. Afterwards, I prepared 4 eggs, ½ Pound of flour, 1 Pound of sugar, ½ Pint of oil. It was the way I did it. But it worked. It was unusual, because it was without an oven and mixer, and without recipe; I just used my intuition and logical process.
If you want to try it this way, it s up to you :
In a small pan break the 4 eggs, mix, the flour, the sugar and the oil. Don t worry about the order : don t bother, what you put first or second. Just do it your own way. Don t mind about if you don t have a mixer. Mix with a fork until the mixture looks like a cream. The cream, must be neither too hard nor to liquid. Make it medium.
The deep pan must have been lined on the bottom with a little bit of oil, before. Then, sprinkle the bottom with flour.
At this step, the pan is kept cold. Pour the mixture, all of it into the deep pan. Try fill first the center of the pan, spread the mixture set itself in the pan. Then, put the lid on the pan.
After that, put the pan on the electric burner. And turn it on the low. Let it cook without taking care of the time ; just sit in your rocking chair, rocking and waiting until the house
Starts to be full of a good and heat smell of cake. At this moment your cake should be good. Put it in a plate. And it s done.
My lazy Sunday afternoon, was full with this good smell. Even in the street the smell went. A homeless stood front of my home gate. I joined him to share my cake.
No more silence in my house, both we enjoyed it.
I thank the supermarket in my neighborhood. Because of their sale and discount, I learned more about humanity.
Sharing my pleasure with a homeless, cost me 3.80 Euros of humanity.
II-What I am not supposed to be.
If I hadn’t made this “humane” cake, I would have been able to express to you a situation of domination that destroys. Only my imagination could tell you what would happen if I was a destroying manipulator.
First of all, I would knock at my neighbor’s door, to borrow some eggs, and flour and sugar, crying about my poor life, jobless and really starving.
Secondly, my hunger would eat all the cake, not sharing with the homeless. I would be selfish.
At least, a manipulator destroys someone. For example, he gives to you a cake with poison. It means, some kind of drugs to control your mind, keeping you weak.
It reminds you certainly of, the famous “ apple with poison “, doesn’t it ?
Just refer to your Bible, ( Adam and Eve) and the kids’ stories.

to be. That is the question”.
It reminds you of Existentialism and the Universal values. No matter the color of your eyes or of your hair. Universal values influence your action.
